Chapter Ten

Redmond had chosen to live on the planet Lycanus when General Renard had offered him a job, so he was used to being much shorter and slighter than everyone else around him. Some men might have been bothered by it, but Redmond was supremely confident and it had never really bothered him all that much. He knew the mark of a man’s worth was not in his size, but in his ability, and the only size that mattered was the brain’s. He hadn’t minded it when he came to live and work on Tygeria, either, where the males were the same size as Lycans. But here on Moravia, for the first time, he had to admit he felt a little intimidated.

These people were giants—even bigger than the Lycans and Tygerians by a few inches and twenty or thirty pounds or more of muscle and brawn. He literally felt dwarfed by them and came up only to the chest of the big Moravian male standing in front of him with his arms crossed over his chest as Redmond stepped down off the shuttlecraft.

Squaring his shoulders and lifting his chin, he refused to appear cowed, even if he was feeling a little daunted. Prince Mikos had sent him here and had confidence that he could do this and so he would. He waited for the man to approach him first.

“Colonel Redmond Sinclair,” the man said, not as a question, and Redmond recognized the Commander he’d been speaking with earlier onboard the spacecraft. He strode forward confidently and came to stand right in front of Redmond.

“Commander Tallon,” Redmond said, greeting him in the same tone. He stuck out his hand and Tallon looked down at it before slowly extending his own. His big hand engulfed Redmond’s and he squeezed it just a bit too firmly, giving Redmond an arrogant smile.

“This is what you humans do, isn’t it? You press your hands together like this? It seems an unsanitary custom.”

So the pissing contest was starting early, it seemed. The big man was trying hard to squeeze his hand to the point that it was painful. Redmond stopped himself from rolling his eyes and didn’t even try to squeeze back. Instead he curled his middle finger up to tickle the commander’s palm. He was pleased to see a look of surprise on the man’s face as he pulled his hand away.

Redmond tried to look innocent. “Can you take me to Prince Vannos?”

Commander Tallon gave him a hard look up and down his body that made him hot all over. Damn, he shouldn’t have done that. These Tygerians and Moravians and Lycans who all preferred men as sexual partners would definitely get the wrong idea from what he’d done. But every time he met one of them, they either challenged him or sized him up. He wasn’t gay or even bi and he was sure of that. Pretty sure, anyway, and he wasn’t here for foolishness or any kind of posturing. He was here to get Vannos and take him home where he belonged.
